Electrical Contact Glands

Electrical contact glands transmit current via the clamped contact surfaces of the conductor materials, not via the screw. They require stable contact pressure and a minimal number of interface surfaces. NSK-E/EL washers offer elastic resilience, anti-loosening protection, and safety in accordance with standards—ideal for modern applications. See also NSK-E Technical Report.

Electrical contact glands for indirect transfer of current

The function of the screw connection here is to generate and maintain the necessary contact pressure against the conductor. The current flows directly through the clamped conductors and not through the screw connection itself. This type of transmission is generally used for live conductors and, in some cases, for potential and earthing applications where contact between conductive contact surfaces needs to be established.

Recommendations for electrical contact glands

  • The number of components, and thus the number of interface surfaces, should be minimised in order to reduce settlement.
  • The use of effective spring-loaded screw locking elements (lock washers or NSK-E or NSK-EL) is recommended in many standards and is beneficial for compensating for creeping, embedding and relaxation effects.
  • Electrical contact glands should also be secured against self-acting loosening by rotation.
  • Regulatory framework: There are no uniform, general standards governing the design of electrical screw-type contact connections. For rail vehicles, specific requirements are set out in DIN EN 17976 and DIN 25210 Part 3.
  • Practical recommendation: Technical publication on design practice

Product recommendations

NSK-E or NSK-EL

The NSK E and NSK-EL contact washers are multifunctional screw-locking elements specifically developed for electrical contact glands.

The NSK-E / NSK-EL offers the following advantages:

  • Specially calibrated to the preload forces of electrical contact glands
  • Securing element to prevent slackening and self-acting loosening by rotation
  • Protects the mating surfaces and ensures a uniform pressure distribution
  • Complies with the current state of the art, including the requirements of DIN 25201-3, DIN 43673, DIN 46206, DIN EN 50343, DIN EN 60204-1, DIN EN 61439-1, (New!) DIN EN 17976…
  • Recommended by DB-Systemtechnik
  • Available in various materials (spring steel / stainless steel (A(2*)4)
  • One-piece / Easy to install
  • Reduction in the number of components / optimisation of overall costs
  • Weight reduction to minimise the global carbon footprint
