DIN 6796
DIN 6796 specifies lock washers as friction-locked spring elements for bolt connections with property classes 8.8 through 10.9 in accordance with DIN EN ISO 898-1. For screws < 8.8, the locking effect may be reduced due to plastic indentation of the lock washer. Lock washers function through elastic deformation and generate a restoring force that compensates for settling and stabilizes the preload. Their effectiveness is defined for the first time in quantifiable terms based on residual spring force in accordance with DIN 267-26.
Lock washers do not provide protection against self-acting loosening by rotation under alternating transverse loads and are therefore suitable only for short bolted joints subjected primarily to axial loads.
